With locations in the Roppongi and Tennoz districts of Tokyo, KOTARO NUKAGA’s distinctive gallery program explores the radical ideas of avant-garde Japanese and international artists. From Postmodern icons such as Kyoji Takubo to rising stars like Tomokazu Matsuyama and Yuichi Hirako, the gallery supports domestic artists while also introducing internationally acclaimed names, such as Stefan Brüggemann and Nir Hod, to the Japanese scene. Through art’s power to critically question our preconceived notions of history and society and its ability to incorporate any and all disciplines—including science and cutting-edge technology—into our methods of thought and expression, KOTARO NUKAGA aims to unravel the institutionalized discourse surrounding the field of contemporary art to showcase its full flexibility.

“Farewell Savane” will be London-based French artist Soimadou Ibrahim’s first exhibition in Japan. Ibrahim hails from Itsinkoudi, a remote village in Ngazidja, the biggest island of the Comoros archipelago (a now-independent nation which was colonized by France), and his works center around depictions of his family and the beauty of his home island. Inspired by Malian musician Ali Farka Touré’s final solo album, Savane (“Savannah” in English), “Farewell Savane” is a story of nostalgia and comfort, rooted in the idea that wherever you may travel, there will be tastes, scents, or slices of scenery along the way that will solidify your identity or fulfill your longing for home.
