ShugoArts was established in 2000 and in 2016 it relocated to complex665 in Roppongi, Tokyo. The gallery holds independent exhibitions and participates in both national and international art fairs and events, while simultaneously producing video content and organizing talks and other art-related activities. ShugoArts is also involved in a number of public art commissions and other commissioned works. Artists represented by the gallery include Masaya Chiba, Yukio Fujimoto, Leiko Ikemura, Masato Kobayashi, Aki Kondo, Lee Kit, Naofumi Maruyama, Anju Michele, Ritsue Mishima, Morimura Yasumasa, Yuji Ono, Yoriko Takabatake, Shiego Toya, Tomoko Yoneda, and others. During Art Week Tokyo, ShugoArts will have a pre-opening of "ShugoArts Studio” on the 4th floor of Terrada Art Complex II in Tennoz before the full-scale operation starts in January 2022.

ShugoArts is pleased to present the two-person exhibition “Where I Am Standing” with works by Yasumasa Morimura and Ritsue Mishima from October 30 to November 27, 2021. This will be the gallery’s first attempt to realize a collaborative project with Morimura, who creates photographic self-portraits in which he is disguised as figures from art history and historical figures of the 20th century, and Mishima, who utilizes glassblowing to create her artworks on the island of Murano, just north of Venice, Italy.

In this exhibition, Morimura will showcase works from his series “Self-Portraits through Art History,” in which he’s disguised as Jan van Eyck, Albrecht Dürer, Leonardo Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Vincent Van Gogh, and Shunsuke Matsumoto, while Mishima will exhibit newly produced works dedicated to the same figures. The special exhibition has been constructed through a world full of layered imagination.
