In July 2015, Yutaka Kikutake Gallery opened its doors in Roppongi, Tokyo. As contemporary art is presented in increasingly diverse modes, the gallery’s purpose is to support artists who seek ever newer ways to express themselves, contributing to the growing heterogeneity. Together with both Japanese and international artists, the gallery hosts a variety of exhibitions with media ranging from painting to photography to sculpture to film.

Yutaka Kikutake Gallery is pleased to present “Critical Plane,” a solo exhibition by Nerhol, who has continued to focus on presences that indicate the diversity embedded within our daily lives as well as how these things have already existed in a sustained manner while changing in appearance over a long period of time. Nerhol believes that everything from the spiritual nature of a person represented by their portrait to the timeliness that inhabits things created by human hands to the natural entities that at first glance appear unrelated to human beings yet in fact have deep ties to human life and activity—all while being a part of the progressive changes that occur within the everyday—play important roles as elements within the dynamic course of history.

This exhibition will consist of a new installation featuring naturalized plants (plants of foreign origin that have become endemic species due to seeds being distributed through the movement of ships and people, then eventually taking root within the local ecosystem), portraits (of people involved in historical events), and sequential photographs based on the historic works by Eadweard Muybridge.
