THE OKURA MUSEUM OF ART
The Okura Museum of Art was established as a foundation in 1917, becoming the first private museum with that status in Japan. The museum dates back to 1902, when it was opened by Kihachiro Okura (1837–1928), a businessman who was active from the Meiji to the Taisho eras. The museum’s collection houses some 2,500 items, including three national treasures, 13 important cultural properties, and 44 important art objects, with a focus on antique art from Japan and East Asia collected by Kihachiro and modern Japanese paintings collected by his eldest son, Kishichiro (1882–1963).
For the second year in a row, the Okura Museum of Art is the host venue of AWT Focus, Art Week Tokyo’s curated sales platform.
